Where to Play Tennis in Greenwich

Greenwich is not a place that springs to mind when thinking of tennis, the south west borough has got that covered.  But just because it doesn’t rally together the world tennis elites each summer for a round of “big deal” televised matches, doesn’t mean that it should be overlooked.  In the past decade a number of its tennis courts have been refurbished, meaning that playing on an even surface is no longer a luxury.

Greenwich Park

The Greenwich Tennis Centre at the beautiful Greenwich Park offers 6 hard macadam courts, all of which underwent a £64,000 refurbishment in 2015.  They are pretty pricey, costing £9 per hour during peak times and £6 pounds for a less sought after slot.  However, the courts are free to under 16s during the weekday walk in period; 3-6pm.  There is an active tennis community at the courts, with coaching available for adults and children run by Play Zennis.  There are also tournaments organised and teams are encouraged to play in local leagues.

Hornfair Park

The Lifestyle Club at Charlton is located in the beautiful Hornfair Park and is one of South London’s premier fitness centres.  The courts used to be in dreadful condition; puddles lurking in the corners, the nets in disarray, but they were given a much needed makeover so are now a joy to play on.  There are 4 adult and 4 junior tennis courts.  Like moths to a floodlit court, these can get very busy during the evenings, but for good reason; they are also very reasonably priced.  The club is run by the GLL, so all bookings can be made through their website.

Eltham Park South

Eltham Park South has 4 respectable macadam courts, that are clearly marked out and well maintained.  A cafe with table tennis courts overlooks play, meaning that time off the court can be just as entertaining as the match itself.  The courts are the home of the community led Greenwich Tennis Club.  The club also plays tennis on mini indoor courts at Eltham Hill School, ensuring that rain doesn’t halt their play.  Coaching sessions run throughout the year, with holiday programmes proving popular for the junior members.  Players are given the opportunity to compete in internal competitions, before spreading their wings to represent the club as individuals and teams.

Ranger's Courts

Ranger’s Courts, Chesterfield Walk has 3 hard courts that are leased by the Greenwhich Council.  Each courts is fenced in, time you would have spent tearing after stray balls is spent playing.  The courts are pleasant to play on, feeling secluded in their location.  Courts need to be booked ahead of time by calling 020 8858 1692.

Blackheath Lawn Tennis Club

The Blackheath Lawn Tennis Club is a members only centre with 11 impeccable floodlit courts; 4 porous acrylic, 3 artificial clay and 4 grass (summer only).  The club has an active social and competitive atmosphere, with extensive coaching programmes and leagues available to both adults and juniors.  Members make use of the main clubhouse bar which is open every weekday evening and from 12pm on weekends.

Bromley Lawn Tennis Club

If the rain is stopping your play, the Bromley Lawn Tennis Club is not to far from the town centre.  It has 14 courts; two indoor, 5 artificial grass, 3 clay and 4 acrylic.  The club has fully qualified coaches running programmes for juniors and adults.  There are opportunities to play both socially and competitively in the many tournaments and leagues that the club hosts or participates in.  Membership forms are obtained by visiting the club reception in person.
