Covering our Tracks: Athletics Tracks in North East London

Athletics is one of the easiest ways to enjoy sport, with plenty of tracks and clubs scattered throughout the city.  It is also a fantastic way to boost your fitness levels, meet new people and get involved in some healthy competition.  We’ve comprised a list of some of the best facilities in the North East to help you track down your favourites.

Newham Leisure Centre, Newham

Located under 4 kilometres away from the Olympic Park, this centre is destined for gold.  Its 400-metre all-weather track, consisting of 8 lanes, is in tip top condition with clear lane marking, an even surface and full floodlight coverage to save you in those dark evenings.  The track features 2 jumping pits and high jumping areas to add a little spring to your step.  There is also an indoor athletics centre that includes a 60-metre indoor running track.

Opening Times:  The track is open Monday to Friday 6.30am to 10 pm and 9 am to 5 pm on the weekends.

Activities:  Classes and open sessions such as Recreational Running, Families beginner running, AthleFIT, Disability Specific, Track and Field.

Ashton Playing Fields, Woodford Green

A 400m all-weather, synthetic track with 6 lanes.  The track is fully floodlit and there are changing facilities in the pavilion right next to the track.  The athletic facilities include two long jump and triple jump pits and a competition hammer.  The javelin and shot put areas are given enough space so that no runner should ever find themselves speared by a rogue throw.

Opening Times:  Monday to Thursday 7 am to 10 pm, 7 am to 7 pm on Fridays and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Activities:  Children’s sports camps, kids training,

Clubs: Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Victoria Park Track

The 5 lane track spanning 400 metres can be found in the northeast nook of Victoria Park in St. Augustine’s Hall.  The track surface is redgra and in alright condition, but is poorly maintained.  Although the track isn’t in amazing condition, it is free to use so great for some casual training.

Opening Times:  Park opening hours; Monday to Sunday dawn til dusk.

Finsbury Park Athletics Track

The tracks are undergoing a £1 million refurbishment due for completion on the 31st May 2016.  The track will be brand new with a refurbished infield, floodlights, new equipment and new carriageway lighting.
