Area guide: Chelmsford

Chelmsford in Essex in known as the home of radio and is the county town of Essex. Actors Joe Thomas (Simon from Inbetweeners, Tom Payne and model Penny Lancaster all grew up in Chelmsford befoe moving into their sprawling mansions. The convenient thing about the town is that it is within the London commuter belt and therefore is home to many East London workers, particularly 'city boys'. It offers a pleasant place to live with several Chelmsford Parks and open spaces such as Hylands Park and Melbourne, whilst the River Can runs through the heart of the city.

On the sporting front, Chelsford is home to Essex Cricket Club who are based at the County Ground on New Writtle Street. The Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre is one of the largest leisure centres in Chelmsford and is home to the Chelmsford Cheiftains ice hockey club as well as Chelmsford Swimming Club. Another notable sports venue in Chelmsford is the Chelmsford campus of Anglia Ruskin University which has an incredible array of sports facilities such as sports hall, gym, dance studios, grass playing fields and 3g football pitches for hire. It has many sports teams including a football, netball, hockey, Rugby Union and even American Football.

Chelmsford Hockey Club has over 150 playing members and considered as not only one of the most successful hockey clubs in Essex, but also within the whole of Great Britain. It has both Men's and Ladies' field hockey playing on astroturf pitches in Chelmsford. Finally there are several Chelmsford schools who open up their facilities for community hire such as King Edward VII Grammar School and Writtle College
